My talk/sharing is titled "It Takes a Village". I will be sharing my life experience with raising a child with bipolar disorder; being a foster parent to troubled teenagers of color (some straight, some gay, some bisexual); and raising 2 of our grandchildren. My husband of 50 years is African American and all 16 kids we've parented are people of color. As a white, middle class person of privilege, I've learned a lot about our American caste system. I was also very active in the UCC Church, often partnering with the UUF on initiatives such as the OWL program. (Our Whole Lives sexuality education)

My professional career and credentials include an AA degree in commercial design and a BA in sociology. As a commercial artist I worked as the Art Director for the CBS affiliate in Seattle-Tacoma Washington, winning a television emmy award in 1982. I went on to advertising and marketing for a restaurant and catering corporation; owning my own event planning business for 10 years and then for 10 plus years before retiring to the Northwoods of Wisconsin in 2014, I worked as a Development Director for nonprofit human services organizations securing about 40 million dollars in funding. One of the projects I'm most proud of is securing the start-up capital for Coming Up; a program to serve 18 to 25 year olds aging out of foster care.

My husband and I are retired, living in Hazelhurst. He is chronically ill and homebound. I volunteer and am currently serving as president of AAUW Northwoods and interim president of the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods.
